We sat in the upper deck, section 326; the first base side looking directly down at home plate. Our seats were in the very last row of the stadium and we actually sat right next to one of the poles of the lighting structure for the stadium. Our section was filled with kids belonging to other teams who play in the YMCA leagues. Most of the kids were older, possibly in the 12 to 15 year old range.
At the 5th inning, Brenden needed to go to the restroom and I needed to stretch my legs, so we went down and afterwards grabbed some nachos and a drink. We went back to our section and waited at the base of the stairs to go up. There were two outs in the bottom half of the inning and I thought it would be best to wait for the end of the inning before going up. Boy how that thinking put us in the right place at the right time.
Shortly after walking towards the stairs, and Brenden saying a quick "Hi" to the security guard, I tried to look down to see what was going on with the game. I saw the batter hit a foul ball. With both of my hands tied up, I took a quick look to see the security guard putting himself in front of Brenden in case the ball came that way, I then looked back up and followed the ball. It hit the small fencing that lines the first row of the upper section, watched the ball then come down, bounce of the concrete, catch the side of a wheelchair of a really nice, older lady who was sitting in one of the handicap seats. I then watched the ball roll towards me and rest right next to my left foot. I was expecting an onslaught of kids to be tackling me for the ball. When I noticed there were no kids, I quickly yelled to Brenden who ran over and picked up the ball. I then told him to hold it up. He did and I backed away...and what an ovation he received!
He got a little embarrassed, but thought it was the coolest thing ever.
Going up the stairs to go back to our seats, everybody was giving him a high five and telling him "good job"!
He especially had fun showing his team members and his coach.
